In 941, the king of Wuyue, Qian Yuanjun, passed away, leaving a young heir to the throne. The Wuyue royal family was then faced with internal and external difficulties. Five years later, the king's younger brother, Qian Hongchu, requested to accompany envoys to the capital of the Later Han, Zhengzhou, to celebrate the New Year. However, the situation in Zhengzhou was that the Khitans were besieging the city, Emperor Shi Zhonggui had become a vassal of the Khitans, and the prime minister, Feng Dao, was trying to balance the interests of various parties amidst the turmoil. On this journey, Qian Hongchu witnessed the tragic collapse of the northern states and the disorder of human relationships. He forged deep bonds of friendship with Zhao Rong and Zhao Kuangyin in times of peril. Upon returning to Wuyue, Qian Hongchu changed his carefree personality and made great strides in the court, eliminating traitors within and suppressing powerful feudal lords outside. He also shouldered the responsibility of the state during times of political turmoil. On the other hand, the northern Zhao Rong inherited the unfinished legacy of Zhao Rong and established the Song Dynasty, launching a southward military campaign. Ultimately, in the face of the unifying trend of the Song Dynasty and the well-being of the common people, Zhao Rong and Qian Hongchu set aside their weapons and completed the historic feat of "returning the land to the Song Dynasty" in the third year of the Taiping Xingguo era (AD 978).
