DERO: Terror from Underground

In 1943, a factory worker in Pennsylvania mailed a letter to a pulp science fiction magazine. He said he had spent years hearing voices — not through his ears, but through his welding machine. He called what he heard the Dero: ancient underground beings using the abandoned machines of a dead civilization to torture the people living above them. He was almost certainly mentally ill. Then fifty thousand strangers wrote in to say they had heard them too. DERO: Terror from Underground traces the full arc of one of the strangest episodes in twentieth-century American life — from Richard Shaver's breakdown in a Detroit auto plant, through the pulp empire that turned his private anguish into a national obsession, to the government disinformation campaign that deliberately drove a New Mexico engineer into a breakdown he never recovered from, to the Dulce Base legend that haunts conspiracy culture to this day. It ends with the question that was always at the center of it: why does every human culture, in every century, put the thing it most fears directly under the floor? The answer runs deeper than the Dero. Richard Shaver didn't invent the terror below. He gave it a wiring diagram. The machine is still running.
